Character Count Guide: Spaces, Limits and Common Use Cases
Understand character counts, the difference between counts with and without spaces, and how to check text limits accurately.
Character limits appear in social profiles, form fields, advertisements, titles, descriptions and application systems. A character counter helps you see exactly how much text you have entered.
Do spaces count as characters?
In many systems, yes. A space is a character. That is why a useful counter often shows both “characters” and “characters without spaces.”
What else may count?
Punctuation, line breaks, emojis and special Unicode symbols can all affect length. Some systems count certain emoji sequences differently, so the destination platform should be treated as the final authority.
